Dental crowns are a restorative dental solution that Dr. Samantha Leatherwood provides in her Denton, TX office. Tooth crowns are made of durable porcelain ceramic that can cover anything from damaged teeth to dental implants. Patients with chipped, cracked, fractured, worn, or otherwise damaged tooth enamel can restore the function of their bite and the aesthetics of their smile with dental crown treatment.

In addition, dental crowns can blend in with natural teeth because porcelain reflects light. Dental crowns may also be color-matched for the most natural-looking result possible. At Leatherwood Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we work with dental labs to fabricate custom and comfortable dental crowns. We want our patients to be able to restore their smiles with the highest quality treatments.

RECEIVING A DENTAL CROWN

A dental crown treatment usually takes two appointments in our office. During your first appointment, we prepare the tooth or teeth for crowns by removing a small portion of the tooth enamel. Preparing the teeth in this way helps ensure that the crown fits properly when it is completed.

Then, we take dental impressions of the teeth that are sent to a dental lab that creates custom crowns. We will place a temporary crown over your tooth or teeth receiving the crown while your permanent crown is being created. After several weeks, you will return to our office where we will remove your temporary crown and attach your permanent dental crown. We will make sure that your permanent crown is secure and feels comfortable.

CARING FOR DENTAL CROWNS

Dental crowns can be cared for just like natural teeth. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly yet gently will help keep them healthy. Directly following your crown treatment, avoid hard foods or beverages like coffee, tea, or wine that can stain the crowns. We recommend that you schedule regular visits to our office, about once every six months so we can ensure your crowns fit properly.

If you have a broken crown, or if your dental crown falls out, try to recover the crown and call our office as soon as possible for an appointment. We provide emergency dental care for broken dental crowns and can advise on steps to take at home to minimize damage. Our team can help to repair or replace your dental crown.

INLAYS AND ONLAYS

Inlays and onlays are comparable to tooth crowns and dental fillings. They can replace lost or damaged fillings or cover the surface of worn teeth. Inlays and onlays are made of a layer of porcelain. Onlays cover the cusps, or sides, of the tooth. They are often called partial crowns because they cover such a large area of the tooth. Inlays fill the area between the cusps.

DENTAL CROWN FAQS

WILL THE DENTAL CROWN MATCH MY OTHER TEETH?

Yes! Dr. Leatherwood will use a color matching tooth to find the perfect shade for your dental crown. It will blend in nicely with the rest of your smile and no one will be able to notice you have a cap. She will use porcelain ceramic to achieve this.

DO DENTAL CROWNS FEEL DIFFERENT THAN NATURAL TEETH?

Your dentist will ensure that your crown fits perfectly. When your top and bottom teeth come in contact when you bite down, you should not be able to tell there is a crown. Crowns are meant to look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.

WHY DO I NEED A DENTAL CROWN AND NOT A FILLING?

Generally speaking, a dentist will use a dental crown to treat teeth that have a lot of damage from decay. They use dental fillings to treat teeth with minor damage from decay.

HOW LONG WILL MY DENTAL CROWN LAST?

This will depend on what your crown is made of and how well you care for it. A porcelain crown is a popular option because it resembles a natural tooth however it has a shorter lifespan. With that being said, if you take good care of your teeth, your porcelain crown can last up to 20 years. The key to any long lasting dental restoration is proper care.
